Jane Petrlik Smolik grew up in Cape Elizabeth, Maine and still returns several times a year with her family to their cottage in Scarborough. “The idea for my first book, In and Out of Portland With Children, began one rainy Memorial Day weekend in 1997 when I had taken my two children to a local bookstore. Looking over shelves full of Maine guidebooks, I was amazed that there was nothing that specifically offered things to do with children. Surely with most of the population living in the southern half of the state and 9 million tourists visiting annually, this was a book waiting to be written.” It wasn’t long before Smolik began creating her original state puzzle book series to keep kids busy on all those rides In and Out of Portland! “Each book is an adventure for me through the history and legends, geography and culture of the state I’m writing about. I loved this kind of book when I was young, and it’s more fun than work now to research and pull them all together,” says Smolik. When not researching and writing books, she keeps busy painting, gardening, reading and spending time with her family.
